The History of Aromatherapy.

Ancient Egypt is widely believed to have been the birthplace not only of medicine and pharmaceuticals, but also of perfumery. Six thousand years ago, Egyptians practiced the art of massage and were renowned for their natural skin care treatments and cosmetic applications. Various natural fragrances, herb oils, balsams, and resins were also used in embalming procedures and for religious ceremonies throughout this early period.

Eventually, the use of aromatics spread from Egypt to Israel, Greece. Rome, and the entire Mediterranean world. These cultures then developed their own unique arts of perfumery using natural oils, but with the terrible loss of fine art and culture during the long centuries of the Dark Ages, much of this knowledge dissipated in the inexorable winds of ignorance. Only in India was the depth of this rich tradition never fully lost. Since it's inception thousands of years ago, Ayurvedic (life-knowledge) medicine remains probably the oldest form of herbal application believed to be in continuous use.

Even in the Renaissance, the Age of Reason, the Industrial Revolution, and the ultimate rise of modern science-despite their historic contributions to human knowledge-did little to preserve the herbal traditions of the past. As the prestige and influence of empirical science waxed, understanding of herbal theory continued to wane. In the 1920's, however, a French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, made a remarkable discovery. While working in his laboratory, he severely burned his arm and thrust it into the nearest vat of cold liquid-lavender oil. Gattefosse was stunned to find that the pain of his burn seemed to lessen and that there was no apparent redness, inflammation, or blistering on his arm. This fortious event lead Gattefosse to coin the term "aromatherapy".

Others followed Gattefosse on the path of rediscovering the potential cosmetic and therapeutic uses of essential oils. Today, thousands of aromatherapists practice in England, France, Russia, Japan, and many other countries around the world. With the addition of a growing field of a aficionados and professionals in the United States, aromatherapy is rekindling ancient traditions, melding them with a modern, scientific understanding of the plant world and its relationship to human health and well-being.

A pure essential oil is one that has not been diluted with chemicals or artificial substances of any kind. It is the oil of a particular plant that remains untouched and unchanged--just as it was right after the distillation process. While many companies sell perfumed oils or oils that are "commercial grade" or less, Neways uses pure essential oils with the highest quality--oils that can be used with confidence. The potential therapeutic uses of essential oils have yet to be fully realized or understood.
